- Booking a double for just 1 guest? Some hotels charge more for a room with 2 beds in anticipation of 2 guests (which might mean extra cleaning). See if they’ll drop the rate if it’s just 1 person staying.

- Already know about upcoming travel? It’s always a good idea to book in advance as rates may increase closer to the trip. If you need to cancel later, you may still have time to avoid the fees.

- Booking multiple rooms? Negotiate special discounts with the hotel directly.

Call the hotel directly and don’t hesitate to ask about exceptions/special accommodations or clarification on policies. For example, a lot has changed in the hospitality industry in response to COVID-19. That might mean common areas may be closed, but there are still options. Don’t hesitate to call and ask if bike rentals are available in lieu of fitness centers, if grab n’ go breakfasts are available upon request, or if any additional fees can be waived due to lack of available amenities!
