Save Money?
Get Fit?
Travel more?
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_column_text]At the beginning of every year we often find ourselves making the same New Year’s Resolutions, but how long do we actually stick to them? A few days, a few weeks, a few months?
Think about this: resolutions without intentional solutions tend to be short-lived. What’s the point of setting the bar high without achieving the simple changes that make true differences over time? While we believe you can do anything you set your mind to, it’s time to give yourself realistic goals that are totally crushable.
To help, we’ve put together a list of 6 ways you’re guaranteed to get on track for total financial fitness in 2021. Below you’ll find tips to maximize savings or tips to just kick your savings journey off – pick whichever one you fancy![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]
#1 Hooked on DoorDash, Grubhub, or UberEats?
Admittedly, so are we, but you aren’t alone. Being forced to eat at home during quarantine did not stop consumers from spending money on eating out. In fact, the convenience of having meals delivered without the hassle of cooking or dining out became a costly habit for many. Food delivery orders nationwide skyrocketed 67% in March 2020 and digital orders jumped 63%.
Bottom line, delivery fees can really add up, how often are you ordering take out?
Max Savings: Try limiting your orders to once a month and spend more time in the kitchen to keep more $$$ in your pocket.
Baby Step Savings: If you’re not ready to commit to reducing by that much; consider making every other order a carry-out/pickup order.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_single_image image=”2683″ img_size=”400X300″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_border” border_color=”white” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]
#2 What did the TV say to the remote?
You turn me on. Seriously, it’s time to stop throwing away $100+ a month on 200 channels you never watch. Ask yourself if you can get by with a couple of streaming services in lieu of cable. (Some of which you might be paying for already on top of your cable bill.) Remember, cable TV is getting pricier and Wi-Fi (for streaming) is getting cheaper.
Max Savings: Consider which streaming service you watch the most (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+) and ditch the rest. You’d be surprised at how quickly you’ll adapt to the change and how little you miss the extra services!
Baby Step Savings: Make a list of all services you are currently paying for and drop one or two to see if you miss them. You can also swap your standard cable for something like YouTubeTV which is significantly less!
What about sports?! Here’s how you can find the right service to stream your favorite sports:
- First, make a list of all the sports teams you watch along with the channels or networks they play on.
- Next, use the Streamable Channel Finder to find which streaming service offers the channels you love.
- Lastly, compare costs of streaming subscription vs cable bill.

#3 Pop Quiz: Solve for Cost per unit (formula below)
Before we get to the math, does buying in bulk actually save you money? At local retail warehouses like Sam’s Club or Costco, you load up the cart, eat the samples (well, at least pre-COVID you could), and peruse the aisles. Everything seems like a great deal until you realize you didn’t actually need that much of one item.
Face it, you don’t want to volume-buy only to throw your “bulk bargains” in the trash. Stick to buying things with a long shelf life and items you know you and your family will need for months to come like:
-
-
-
- Toiletries (dental products, lotions, sunscreen, hand sanitizer)
- OTC medications (allergy, headache medicine)
- Paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, face tissues, diapers)
- Household items (batteries, detergent, garbage bags, light bulbs, air filters)
- Staples/Dry Goods (cereal, canned goods, rice, gum)
-
-
Max Savings: If you’ve got the time, pay attention to the “cost per unit” which is typically listed just below the total price of the item you’re looking to purchase. Cost per unit is calculated by taking the total item price and dividing it by the unit weight or total number of units within the item. Once you’ve ironed out which items you use frequently, consider buying those items in bulk, as their Cost per unit is most likely lower, meaning you’re saving more.
Baby Steps Savings: Buying the items above in bulk can save you money in the long run because the cost per unit is cheaper than buying the items bi-weekly or monthly in your local grocery store.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_single_image image=”2673″ img_size=”400X300″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_border” border_color=”white” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]
#4 Try a no-spending challenge
According to Better Money Habits at Bank of America, on average, Americans budget $846 for gift shopping. That’s not including the other expenses that come along with the holidays like groceries, decorations, and other activities. Sometimes we lose sight of our goals and need to refocus.
What better time to reset than the New Year to try a no-spending challenge. Whether it be for a month, a week, or even a few days, it’s important to find ways to recommit to your budget goals.
Max Savings: Choose 1-3 items to remove from your spend for one month. This could be delivery pizza (you can still get it, just carry out), Starbucks, in-app mobile purchases, Amazon purchases, anything you want! Money talks – can you give up these 7 things to save dough?
Baby Steps Savings: Choose 1-3 things and instead of removing them from your budget altogether, just set limits for yourself. For example, instead of ordering a $14/glass of wine, order something under $12. Or instead of impulse shopping online, don’t let yourself click that “Buy Now” button unless it’s under a certain amount. This approach will help you slow down and think on your purchases a bit more before opening your wallet.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_single_image image=”2672″ img_size=”400X300″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_border” border_color=”white” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]
#5 Rebuild (or start) your emergency fund
Set it up and forget about it. Arrange for money to be automatically deducted from your checking account to a savings or investments account for a less painful approach to saving.
Max Savings: Talk to your employer about setting up an additional direct deposit account for your paycheck where you specify a particular amount to go directly into that new account. This could be $10 per paycheck or $100 per paycheck. By scheduling these deductions to occur automatically on payday, you won’t even feel them – out of sight, out of mind!
Baby Steps Savings: Talk to friends or family about how they manage to save money. If nothing else, just get a light conversation going to help you make a decision that you’re comfortable with![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text]
Check out this money-saving tip from a Globeo team member:
“I auto-transfer $10 into a separate checking account on a daily basis. The same $10 I would have used to buy coffee or grab lunch becomes my personal travel fund. I get motivated when I see how quickly my money builds. By the end of the month I can save up to $310.”
