LIGHTS, Camera, Action!

That’s not just in showbiz, baby! Lighting is key to any meeting – on or off camera. When it comes to on screen, poor lighting could be hurting you more than you realize. A dimly-lit or washed-out subject can be hard to see and distracting. This makes it hard for the attendees to pay attention and your presentation might be lost on everyone watching.

So what can you do? Open up your blinds and let that natural light brighten up the space around you. Avoid having light directly behind you as it makes it harder for your webcam to focus. For best results, you want your light source to be directly in front of you or shining on both sides of your face to avoid shadows.

Pro Tip: Your screen can be a source of light. Try adjusting your screen brightness for better lighting in your next video call. If that doesn’t work for you, check out one of the ring lights below recommended by a Globeo team member:[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]Clip-On Ring Light

Large Ring Light

What it is: A circular lighting tool that will evenly illuminate the subject of a close-up video and/or photograph without casting unwanted shadows.

How it’ll change your life:

“It turns out ring lights aren’t just for social media influencers, and believe it or not, lighting can really make or break your virtual meeting. The clip-on ring light has an incredibly handy clip that allows you to move it around. It’s perfect for eyeglass wearers because of how flexible it is and it wont break the bank.”

Did you get my good side?

Have you ever accidentally taken a selfie of yourself looking down into your camera lens? (Excuse us, while we cringe at the thought.) That’s why you should always position your webcam at eye level. To achieve this, use a stack of books, a high-top table, or laptop stand so that your audience doesn’t get an unflattering look up at you.

Pro Tip: Keep your drink next to you during your meeting and don’t be afraid to take a drink (if it’s appropriate). The action of taking a sip will refresh your throat and will bring some familiarity and personality to your meeting. Stay alert & feel good with this Globeo WFH recommendation:[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]Cold Brew Coffee Maker

What it is: This appliance allows you to make cold brew by steeping coffee grounds in cold water (rather than hot) for 12-24hrs.

How it’ll change your life:

“One of my favorite pre-quarantine rituals was grabbing a cold brew from my favorite coffee shop on the way to work. This purchase changed the game because now I enjoy my cold brew from my home office. Not only is it simple to use and easy to clean, but it’s a total money saver!”

Is it look me in my EYE or EYES?

Direct eye contact strengthens your presence in a virtual setting – no questions asked. But, how do you make direct eye contact when you’re not directly in front of someone? There’s 2 ways to fake it:

      1. Try speaking directly to the camera instead of looking at your co-workers on the screen. This gives that ‘direct eye contact’ appearance to the other attendees. Focusing on your camera the entire meeting may not come naturally to you because face it, we’re more comfortable looking at the people we’re talking to; however, keep in mind that doing so will increase the impact of your speaking points and presence on-camera.
      2. Try moving the line of participants’ faces so that your recipient is positioned near and/or below your camera. This will help you continue speaking to that individual without getting distracted, and it will give the appearance that you’re making eye contact with them. As you speak with other participants directly, just click and drag their video icon to that same position.

Pro Tip: Keep the Rule of Thirds in mind when you position yourself. Here are two game-changing recommendations to alleviate common ‘work from home’ struggles:[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]Blue Light Blocking Glasses for back or hip pain

Adjustable Saddle Chair for back or hip pain

What it is: A specially crafted lens that helps to block or filter out the blue light given off from digital screens, and an ergonomic seat to encourage better posture.

How it’ll change your life:

“These amazing blue light blocking glasses helped alleviate my eye fatigue and headaches from long-term computer use.”

Don’t Wing It!

Are your video chats becoming too casual? Formalities aside, people are still tuning in to listen to what you have to say, so it’s best to come prepared. We’re not saying every word needs to be scripted, but a few notes or a bullet-pointed outline will do you wonders.

Pro Tip: Test your video before the call starts. Show up to your meeting ready to go so that you’re not adjusting your surroundings, screen brightness, angles, or checking your hair when you’re on live. Probably one of the most underestimated office tools you should be using is a:[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]Dry Erase Calendar/Planner Board

What it is: A combination calendar board for writing, planning, and displaying information.

How it’ll change your life:

“My favorite Amazon purchase in 2020 is probably my dry erase board that also has a calendar on it. I write my meeting notes on one side and my day-to-day tasks on the calendar itself. It has limited my use of paper and it’s easy to change things if needed.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]

Location, Location, Location.

Whether you’re working from home or scheduling a virtual happy hour with friends; keeping a clean, presentable space to video chat is not always a simple task. If your background is too busy, your audience will spend more time looking and thinking about what’s going on behind you rather than paying attention to you. Meeting after meeting in the same office space can get a little boring. Browse Zoom’s curated list of virtual backgrounds, download your favorites, and add them to your next meeting.

Pro Tip: Noisy housemates, messy background, and monotonous routines got you down? Spice things up by turning a regular workday into a luxurious experience with Hyatt’s new ‘Office for the Day’ package. If that’s not a viable option, but you still want to switch it up, try working outdoors or on your patio. One of our team members splurged on the item below and had zero regrets about it:[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]Radius Zone Mosquito Repeller from Thermacell

What it is: This device conveniently repels mosquitos in a 15-foot area with one touch of a button. No spray, no scent, and no mess.

How it’ll change your life:

“After being cooped up for months, I got this mosquito repeller for the backyard. It is SUPER effective, I recommend setting it up at least 10 minutes before you plan to sit outside to allow for the repellant to disperse. I love to work from my patio, but hate the bug bites and bug spray that comes with it, so this was a win for me.”

What makes us experts on virtual meetings?

When things began to change in early 2020, we opted to do our part by having our entire team work remotely. That shift brought on new sets of hurdles as we navigated an entirely virtual work world. From there, Globeo decided to view things as growth opportunities and we got creative with our professional development training. We began working with Acting Consultant Colum Morgan over at Visual Thinking, who helped our entire team improve our virtual presence. In addition to some of the tips we’ve offered above, Colum provided our team members with increased awareness and a wealth of knowledge that we now use in our day-to-day![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]
